Ernest E. Hamilton, 83, of McLeansboro, died at 10:50 a.m. on Friday, December 26, 1997, at Hamilton Memorial Hospital. He was a retired mail carrier for the McLeansboro Post Office.
He was born on May 14, 1914, in Mt. Vernon, a son of Henry Woodford Hamilton and Lillian Mae (Hestwood) Johnson. On July 21, 1947, in Dixon, Kentucky, he married Mary Marie Johnson, who survives. He attended McLeansboro Church of Christ and was a member of VFW Post #1671 and the Hamilton County Chapter of AARP.
The funeral was at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 28, 1997, at Harre Funeral Home in McLeansboro. The Rev Robert Sefried officiated. Burial was in IOOF Cemetery in McLeansboro.
Besides his wife, Mr. Hamilton is survived by two daughters, Wanda Shay and husband Edward of McLeansboro, Judy Spitzer and husband Allan of Champaign; five grandchildren, Jocelyn Sptizer and Corey Spitzer of Champaign, Brendy Shay and Carolyn Shay of McLeansboro, Betsy Holder and husband Mark of Kalamazoo, Michigan; one great-grandchild, Stephanie Holder of Kalamazoo; two sisters-in-law, Edith Hamilton of Forest Park, Illinois, and Helen Hamilton of Covington, Louisana.; and two brothers-in-law, Arthur Cottingham of McLeansboro and Alvin Johnson of Topeka, Illinois.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Ivan and Robert Hamilton; and three sisters, Ruby Cottingham, Mildred Warren and husband Inman, Velma Mariner and husband Charles.
