Ernest Eugene Flannigan, 73, of McLeansboro, died at 4:45 a.m. on Thursday, August 27, 1998, at his residence. He was a retired operating engineer.
He was born on February 9, 1925, in Blairsville, a son of Carl and Mary (Leather) Flannigan. On October 6, 1954, he married Ruth Miller, who preceded him in death on March 29, 1989. He attended the First General Baptist Church in McLeansboro. He was a member of Local 318 Operatoring Engineers of Harrisburg. He served in World War II in the Navy as a member of the Mobile Amphibious Assault Team in the Aleutian Islands.
The funeral was at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, August 30, 1998, at Harre Funeral Home in McLeansboro. The Rev. Robert Sefried officiated. Burial was in Ten Mile Cemetery in McLeansboro.
Mr. Flannigan is survived by one son, Danny Flannigan of Centralia; three daughters, Janice Kelly of Centralia, Pat Horton of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Beatrice Birkner of Dahlgren; five grandsons, Ron Birkner and wife Cindy of McLeansboro, Tim Horton and wife Carrol, Tommy Horton and wife Christina and Terry Horton and wife Christy, all of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Phillip Flannigan of Centralia; and eight great-grandchildren.
Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, son Phillip and one brother, John Flannigan.
