Emory E. Hughes, 93, of Belle Rive, died at 4:02 p.m. on Friday, September 18, 1998, at his home, where he resided with his daughter and son-in-law for the last five years. He was a retired teacher and farmer.

He was born on April 1, 1905, in Jefferson County, a son of William E. and Rado (Heck) Hughes. He was a member of the Logan Street Baptist Church in Mt. Vernon and Illinois Retired Teachers Association.

The funeral was at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 20, 1998, at Gholson Funeral Home in Dahlgren. The Rev. Kenneth Holland and Rev. Glen Payne officiated. Burial was in the IOOF Cemetery in Dahlgren.

Mr. Hughes is survived by, one daughter, Kay Baker and her husband Frank of Belle Rive; two grandchildren, Rick and wife Lisa of Bluford and Debby McKinney of McLeansboro; three great-grandchildren, David Gage, Daniel and Michaela Morlan, all of McLeansboro; four stepgrandchildren, Jacque Kiefer and Randee of McLeansboro, Ronda and David Payne of Thompsonville, Katie Kiefer of Los Angeles, California, Rodney Kiefer of Albion; two stepgreat-grandchildren, Sue and Jim Sammons of Mt. Vernon and Kim and Todd Raufeisen of Rock Island, Illinois; two nieces, Zoe Eaves and Martha Wiphler, one nephew, Calvin Daily; many greatnieces and great-nephews; and other stepgreat-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son Richard E. Hughes; one brother; and three sisters.

Memorial may be made to Hospice of Good Samaritan.
