H. L. (Henry Learned) Duncan, 79, of Dahlgren, died at 2:22 p.m. on Saturday, February 7, 1998, at Good Samaritan Regional Health Center in Mt. Vernon. He was a retired farmer and worked several years at the former Mt. Vernon Car Shops.
He was born on August 29, 1918, in Dahlgren, a son of Gordon and Bessie (Learned) Duncan. On November 1, 1942, he married Nana H. Stolz, who died on May 23, 1994. He was a deacon and member of Belle Rive Missionary Baptist Church and served as song leader in churches for over 40 years. He was a board member of Richardson Hill Cemetery Association, past board member of Richardson Hill Cemetery Association, past board member of Turner Grade School and Dahlgren High School, U.S. Army veteran of World War II, and avid horse fan and member of Belle Rive Saddle Club and attended many horse pulling contests.
The funeral was at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, February 10, 1998, at the Belle Rive Misisonary Baptist Church. The Rev. Richard McCormick and Rev. Steve Hamson officiated. Burial was in Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Dahlgren. Gholson Funeral Home of Dahlgren was in charge of the arrangements.
