Marguerite Hawkins, 91, of Sarasota, Florida, and formerly of Walpole, died at 8:55 a.m. on Saturday, January 31, 1998, at the Heartland Nursing Home in Sarasota. She was a retired rural country school teacher and later worked for the State of Illinois as a mental health recreation supervisor.
She was born on September 27, 1906, in Hamilton County, a daughter of Frank M. and Josie (Logsdon) Rhine. She married Clarence D. Hawkins on December 18, 1926, and he died on August 31, 1960. She was a member of the Eastern Star and Retired Teachers Association. Mrs. Hawkins was raised in the Walpole area and attended the one-room Cantrell School. She was a graduate of Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. She also resided in Chesterfield, Missouri, for a few years.
The funeral was at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, February 4, 1998, at Gholson Funeral Home in McLeansboro. The Rev. Ken Cook officiated. Burial will be in the IOOF Cemetery in McLeansboro.
Mrs. Hawkins is survived by one daughter, Clarita Jo Stainbrook and husband Charles of mokomis, Florida; three grandchildren, Jeffrey K. Stainbrook and wife Reyne of Thornton, Colorado, Sara L. Watkins and husband Bill of West Lafayette, Indiana, J. Todd Stainbrook and wife Barbara of Memphis, Tennessee; and four great-grandchildren, Meagan, Tom, Billy and Maggie.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, six brothers and three sisters.
