James E. Carlton

James E. Carlton, 74, of McLeansboro, died at 1:45 p.m. on Sunday, May 2, 1999, at his home. He was a retired oil field worker and farmer and worked for the Supervisor of Assessments office for 12 years.

He was born on May 18, 1903, in Macedonia, a son of Denver and Ruth (Anderson) Carlton. He was married to Elinor Browning, then to Gertrude Duncan, both of whom preceded him in death. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a member of the Carmi VFW Post, American Legion Post #106 and the McLeansboro Eagles Lodge.

Visitation was at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 5, 1999, at Gholson Funeral Home in McLeansboro. The Rev. Ray Eugene Rister officiated. Burial was in Pleasant Grove Cemetery near McLeansboro. The funeral was at 1:00 p.m. at the funeral home in McLeansboro. The Rev. Billie Duncan officiated. Burial was in IOOF Cemetery in McLeansboro with graveside military rites by American Legion Post #106.

He is survived by a daughter, Toni Freuthart and husband Phil of Kincaid, Illinois; a stepdaughter, Carolyn Hall and husband Ron of McLeansboro; a brother, Charles Canton of McLeansboro; a special friend and companion, Elaine Ballard of McLeansboro; four grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; four greatgrandchildren; and five stepgreatgrandchildren.

Besides his wives, he was preceded in death by his parents and one grandson.
