Herbert C. Cornelius, 83, of McLeansboro, died at 9:15 p.m. Tuesday, August 1, 2000, at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville, Indiana, of cancer.
He was born February 1, 1917, in London, Kentucky to Sherman and Lela (Brown) Cornelius. He married Charlotte Shideley on September 7, 1935, and she preceded him in death in 1982. He married Rella McGehee Smith and she preceded him in death in 1999.
Mr. Cornelius was a retired pipeline construction engineer. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Union Town, Ky. He was protestant by faith.
He is survived by one son, Richard Cornelius and wife, Paula of Nashville; one brother, Kenneth Cornelius and wife, Marcia of Indianapolis; one sister, Clara Bunyard of Stroud, Oklahoma; two stepgrandchildren, Scott Webb and wife, Cherri of Dahlgren, Lisa and husband, Scott Russell of McLeansboro; two great-stepgrandchildren, Justin and Brandon Webb of Dahlgren; and a special friend and care giver, Ruby Reasor of Eldorado.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wives; one brother, Lester; one sister, Alice; and one stepson, Darrell Webb.
Funeral services were at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, August 5, 2000, at Gholson Funeral Home in McLeansboro. Rev. Robert Sefried officiated. Burial was in I.O.O.F. Cemetery in McLeansboro.
