Willis R. Gholson
Born January 13, 1912 - Died March 14, 2001

Willis R. Gholson, 89, of McLeansboro died Wednesday, March 14, 2001, at Hamilton Memorial Hospital.

He was an educator in Hamilton County for 37 years, including 20 years as the Hamilton County superintendent of schools.

He was born on January 13, 1912 in Walpole, the son of Lawrence Elmer and Ethel (Rhine) Gholson. He married Evelyn Jones of 60 years and she survives.

He was a graduate of Southern Illinois University in Carbondale and received his master’s degree from the University of Illinois.

He was a member of the Masons, First Baptist Church and Illinois Retired Teacher’s Association.

Surviving are his wife, Evelyn; two sons, Tom of Crossville and Terry of Beardstown; four grandchildren, Dr. Travis, Sarah and Tracy Gholson and Denise Sloan; and a great-grandchild.

Funeral services were at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, March 17, 2001 at Gholson Funeral Home. Rev. John Denham officiated. Burial was in Odd Fellows Cemetery in McLeansboro.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Josie (Gholson) Shipley.
